Beard Papa
I’ve been dying to try this place out ever since I heard about the opening, but with Katy being quite the trek, I opted to wait for some of the hoopla to die down to avoid the lines as well as for an opportunity to actually be in the area.
I arrived around 1PM to find only 2 other diners inside and the 2 later groups of people who arrived after me, primarily ordering take out requests.
I ordered my standard matcha latte and a green tea puff to eat there — figured if it was amazing, I would order more to take home. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but considering the excitement around Beard Papa‘s arrival to the Houston area, I was expecting a more mouthgasmic experience?
The filling was good and not overly sweet, but the puff shell, was bland (even with the matcha icing). The puff shell was also rather dry in comparison to other cream puffs I’ve eaten. Moeller’s Bakery does a pretty great job with their cream puffs and is usually who I suggest when people ask for recommendations.
The average tasting cream puff wasn’t what marred the experience or the long drive to visit, but the horribly disappointing matcha latte. Unlike most places that have a dark green matcha blend, this was some watered down tepid olive colored mix. The coloring reminded me of what the Hulk would look like if he got food poisoning. Seeing that when I left, crowds of people were bustling inside the tea house next door, the drinks aren’t the selling point at Beard Papa.
I did hear from one friend that the original Osaka location is best, so maybe it’s a franchising issue. I’m hoping what I experienced was just an off day and the one that will open up in Bellaire next year will be better? I’d be hesitant to recommend this place for those who live outside the Katy area. Or for those who go, definitely avoid the drinks and just stick to the cream puffs.
Going to wait for the Bellaire location to open before I visit them again for a final assessment.
