Impressions

I jokingly tell people that I could eat at a different restaurant every day for a year, but still wouldn’t make a dent in trying out all the restaurants the city has to offer.

So how does one go about choosing where to dine when there are so many options available? Many of my food outings are dictated by the various cravings that sometimes take hold, but mostly, familiarity with what the city has to offer is what steers me towards certain restaurants over others.  Location is also incredibly important. Because I work and live inside the 610 Inner Loop, many of my food adventures are to places that are easily accessible.  While Chinatown Bellaire is a favorite haunt, I save those outings along with any Outer Loop exploring for the weekends when I’m not so pressed for time.

Besides word of mouth from trusted foodie friends, Instagrammers, CultureMap, Eater Houston, and the Houstonia are great resources for putting new restaurants on my radar.

I gravitate towards Asian food and lighter cuisine, but I am open to trying all types of food as long as I’m not overpaying for mediocre and/or overly pretentious food; the restaurant also has to abide by my Dining Out Rules.

The primary goal of this website is to provide uninfluenced reviews of new restaurants around town and recommend established personal favorites.  I do not have culinary training — I am just a Houstonian who has a deep passion for food, enjoys learning more about a culture through it’s cuisine, and bonding with other foodies over a shared delicious meal.

Ideally a visit to a new restaurant would produce a review that includes these points:

  • Initial impression of Food
  • Comparison to similar establishments if applicable
  • Dress Code/Family-Friendly
  • Cost range
  • Parking Situation

While I strive to be fair and objective, I will not hesitate to be brutally honest if something is appallingly awful — typically restaurants that over-charge for less than average food. Thankfully, I have not experienced too many restaurants that fall into the category of needing an Angry Asian Review™ — something friends have “endearingly” labeled my negative reviews.

So check back often to see what type of food adventures I can find.
