Bae
I’ve never been a big fan of the “junk food” topping on desserts, but all the pretty Instagram posts had me curious about the ice cream itself. I visited on a Friday night and despite it being relatively early in the evening (6:30PM), it was fairly packed. I’m not sure if the flavors rotate monthly like Aqua S and since there was a line, I didn’t want to be inconsiderate and hold up the line by asking too many questions. Diners though had the option of the swirl of two flavors or a single flavor on cup ($4.25), waffle cone ($4.50), or waffle bowl ($4.75). Flavors included Strawberry/Banana (Vegan), Fruity…

Sul Bing Su
My last visit out to Katy Asian Town for dessert was met with mediocre results, so I was uncertain whether this second visit would be another similarly disappointing experience. I’m happy to report that the Sul Bing Su met and exceeded every one of my expectations. I ordered the Matcha Ice Cream Taiyaki with a Pistachio Macaron. There’s the option of filling it with Nutella or Custard, but I opted for simply the Matcha Ice Cream. I appreciated that the ice cream was made from high quality ingredients unlike some of the other establishments in Bellaire that focus on novelty instead of actual quality ice cream. The fish shaped waffle…

Beard Papa
I’ve been dying to try this place out ever since I heard about the opening, but with Katy being quite the trek, I opted to wait for some of the hoopla to die down to avoid the lines as well as for an opportunity to actually be in the area. I arrived around 1PM to find only 2 other diners inside and the 2 later groups of people who arrived after me, primarily ordering take out requests. I ordered my standard matcha latte and a green tea puff to eat there — figured if it was amazing, I would order more to take home. I wasn’t quite sure what to…

Matcha Cafe Maiko
I’ve died and gone to matcha heaven! Never before have I dined at a place in Houston (or elsewhere in another Asiantown), where there was such a variety of offerings and every single item on the menu had matcha in it. Definitely one of those times I wish I had multiple stomachs or at the least, brought a large group with me so I could try more items. I should warn that the matcha here is strong and has a slight bitterness to it. Those accustomed to the lighter (and diluted) variety found in American Establishments will be in for a shock. I went around 6:30PM and didn’t have to…

Ma – ka – Rohn (Online)
As a huge Potterhead, I couldn’t pass up a tasting when an ad for the Potter’ohn Macarons came up in my Instagram Feed. The flavors in the 12-pack included: Butterbeer (red/orange), Chocolate Frog (dark brown/silver), Fizzing whizbees (dark brown/yellow) and Polyjuice (green/silver). I enjoyed the Butterbeer and Chocolate Frog the most. The fruit punch flavor on the Fizzing Whizbees tasted like bland fruit and even though the Polyjuice was supposed to be sour apple, it tasted more like lime to me. From ordering to shipping, it took about 7 days to arrive to me in Houston. While the flavor held during shipping, I can’t help but wonder if things would…

Steel City Pops (Rice Village)
I’m happy to learn that Steel City Pops decided to add a storefront at Rice Village. I’ve always been a fan of their flavors, but wasn’t in the Heights often enough to consistently visit. Granted there’s room, patrons can park for free (up to 2 hours) at the above parking garage. The alternative is to pay for metered parking or if you’re just picking up to go, 15 minute only parking out front. There’s no place to sit inside or outside, unless you wanted to sit on the stairs. The only downside is that the heat will melt your popsicle, so you’re forced to eat it rather quickly or risk…

Aqua S
This is one of those places you visit for the ambiance and the Instagram photos. The ice cream can be served in a cup or a chocolate cone. What makes everything expensive are the add-ons. Nearly a dollar each for the cotton candy (floss), toasted marshmallow on Pocky stick, and Pop Rocks and your inexpensive ice cream now because the price of a bowl of ramen in Bellaire. Their flavors rotate monthly and they also have small pints of ice cream you can purchase to take home. If you don’t go during peak times, you won’t have to deal with long lines or large groups of people. Unfortunately because of…
