    B&T Cafe

Kept seeing posts of this place in my Instagram feed and decided to pay them a visit. I haven’t had a good banh mi for lunch since Les Bagets changed concepts at their Montrose location. I’m not a fan of Les Girvals or Oui Banh Mi and Roostar is too far of a drive for lunch, so I was hopeful that this place might be the replacement sandwich place I needed. The place is family owned and everyone was diligently working to quickly make drinks and sandwiches for the customers. Everything was fresh and my favorite part of the meal was the softness of the bread. Nothing irritates me more…

Ma – ka – Rohn (Online)

As a huge Potterhead, I couldn’t pass up a tasting when an ad for the Potter’ohn Macarons came up in my Instagram Feed. The flavors in the 12-pack included: Butterbeer (red/orange), Chocolate Frog (dark brown/silver), Fizzing whizbees (dark brown/yellow) and Polyjuice (green/silver). I enjoyed the Butterbeer and Chocolate Frog the most. The fruit punch flavor on the Fizzing Whizbees tasted like bland fruit and even though the Polyjuice was supposed to be sour apple, it tasted more like lime to me. From ordering to shipping, it took about 7 days to arrive to me in Houston. While the flavor held during shipping, I can’t help but wonder if things would…

    Costco (Food Court)

The internet was all abuzz with articles about Costco and the new Acai Bowls at their food courts, so of course I had to check it out and see how comparable it was to the Acai Bowls at Nourish — which I absolutely LOVE. While you can’t beat the $5 price tag, the flavor wasn’t quite as refined as the bowls found at Nourish. Still it was decent and my only complaint, besides the large portion that could feed a small family of 3, was the hardness of the granola bar and how it felt like I was going to chip a damn tooth on it. I don’t know if…

    Steel City Pops (Rice Village)

I’m happy to learn that Steel City Pops decided to add a storefront at Rice Village. I’ve always been a fan of their flavors, but wasn’t in the Heights often enough to consistently visit. Granted there’s room, patrons can park for free (up to 2 hours) at the above parking garage. The alternative is to pay for metered parking or if you’re just picking up to go, 15 minute only parking out front. There’s no place to sit inside or outside, unless you wanted to sit on the stairs. The only downside is that the heat will melt your popsicle, so you’re forced to eat it rather quickly or risk…

    Tamashi Ramen and Sushi (Holcomb)

I kept seeing mention of this place in my Ramen Group and decided to swing by for lunch. Wasn’t sure what to expect with it’s limited parking out front and small restaurant space, but I’m so thankful I decided to give this place a chance. The Tonkotsu broth was absolutely amazing and the meat perfectly tender and flavorful. As much as I enjoy Ramen Tatsuya, the broth here is hands down my new favorite. Parking can be tricky. If diners don’t find parking out front, there is parking in the back — although it looks a bit sketchy. With about 12 tabled seats and another 4 at the bar, if…

    East Hampton Sandwich Co.

I love seafood and was incredibly excited to hear about another lobster roll option in Houston. I probably should have chosen a better time to visit besides Sunday at 1:00PM so close to it’s grand opening because it took me almost 15 minutes to get through the line. There’s considerably larger pieces of lobster with the rolls here as well as a stronger Chesapeake Bay seasoning. I found it slightly a notch above Mainely Sandwiches. I also appreciate that they have a variety of hot non-seafood sandwiches on their menu. Neptune Oyster in Boston still has the best lobster roll I’ve ever eaten. I’m looking forward to the Montrose location…

    Aqua S

This is one of those places you visit for the ambiance and the Instagram photos. The ice cream can be served in a cup or a chocolate cone. What makes everything expensive are the add-ons. Nearly a dollar each for the cotton candy (floss), toasted marshmallow on Pocky stick, and Pop Rocks and your inexpensive ice cream now because the price of a bowl of ramen in Bellaire. Their flavors rotate monthly and they also have small pints of ice cream you can purchase to take home. If you don’t go during peak times, you won’t have to deal with long lines or large groups of people. Unfortunately because of…

    Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken

Fried chicken doesn’t usually end up in my regular food rotation, just because it tends to weigh me down and I feel like I’m walking through molasses for days. Still, I was curious as to how it compared to some of the Houston staples around town. My dining companion had the luxury of eating at the original Memphis location, so I deferred to her regarding what to order. The chicken was definitely flavorful with a nice spicy kick. I also appreciated that it wasn’t dry. The sides were decent and what stood out most to me was how friendly and helpful the waitstaff was in making our dining experience enjoyable.…

    Wanna Bao (Take 2)

I couldn’t stop thinking about their scallion pancakes so I made another visit to Wanna Bao — this time in the evening right as they were opening up for business. Since I had multiple dining companions with me, I was able to order and sample more items off their menu. The pancakes were on point and will be a staple order whenever I dine here. Unlike the previous dining experience, the shrimp soup dumplings arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. They were flavorful, but comparable soup dumplings CAN be found in Bellaire. I do, however, like the option of having authentic tasting dumplings near work. The Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck…
