    Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken

Fried chicken doesn’t usually end up in my regular food rotation, just because it tends to weigh me down and I feel like I’m walking through molasses for days. Still, I was curious as to how it compared to some of the Houston staples around town. My dining companion had the luxury of eating at the original Memphis location, so I deferred to her regarding what to order. The chicken was definitely flavorful with a nice spicy kick. I also appreciated that it wasn’t dry. The sides were decent and what stood out most to me was how friendly and helpful the waitstaff was in making our dining experience enjoyable.…

    Wanna Bao (Take 2)

I couldn’t stop thinking about their scallion pancakes so I made another visit to Wanna Bao — this time in the evening right as they were opening up for business. Since I had multiple dining companions with me, I was able to order and sample more items off their menu. The pancakes were on point and will be a staple order whenever I dine here. Unlike the previous dining experience, the shrimp soup dumplings arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. They were flavorful, but comparable soup dumplings CAN be found in Bellaire. I do, however, like the option of having authentic tasting dumplings near work. The Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck…

    Les Noo’dle

While the restaurant soft opened over a month ago, Les Noo’dle (the re-branded Les Bagets) officially opened today. In celebration of it’s grand opening, they showcased the Pho Royale — a giant cauldron of pho filled with various meats and capable of feeding a family of 3. Those who follow me on Instagram know how much I love the broth here and am constantly singing it’s praises. I especially appreciate that they don’t skimp on their protein and actually use quality meats. While I am sadden that I can no longer order the vermicelli salad bowls or banh mi’s at this location, the added chicken and vegan options are a…

    Wanna Bao

Having seen the restaurant show up repeatedly in my social media feeds this week, I decided to stop by for lunch today. They have a fairly decent parking lot that accommodates around 20+ cars, but all those spots were taken at 11:40AM. Add to it the Midtown construction and neighboring streets with the no parking signs, and the whole ordeal made for a stressful parking situation. The restaurant was packed and it took a good 5 minutes before the hostess sat me. It was then I realized that they were severely understaffed with only 2 waitstaff serving the entire restaurant and the hostess doing double work. I was given a…

    Lua Viet Kitchen

I was on my way to Good Dog Houston for lunch when I spotted Lua Viet Kitchen opened for business. Never one to pass on trying a new Asian restaurant in the area, I turned around and opted for lunch here instead. There was a soft opening sign on the door and a small group of people already inside the restaurant. Instead of paper menus, there was an electronic screen on the wall listing their available menu items. Any first time visit to a new restaurant usually entails an order of a staple food so I can compare it to what I’ve had at other restaurants. I ordered a Beef…
